What is a hybrid inverter, and why is it important?

A hybrid inverter is the core of a modern solar panel system with a battery. It controls where the electricity goes – and makes it possible to charge your battery, use the solar power directly in your home, send power out to the grid, and sell it when it's most profitable. In short: without a hybrid inverter, no intelligent control.

What does a hybrid inverter do?

A hybrid inverter combines the functions of a regular solar panel inverter and a battery inverter – while also adding advanced control and communication. It: Charges your battery with surplus power from the solar panels. Draws power from the battery when the sun isn't shining – e.g., in the evening. Sends power out to the grid when the battery is full, and you are not using it yourself. Controls the power flow intelligently based on electricity prices, consumption, and grid needs. Enables power during a power outage, if configured correctly.

Why is it important?

Without a hybrid inverter, your battery will not be able to communicate with the solar panels and the grid simultaneously. This means:

A day in August – cloudy but bright: 11:00 AM – your system produces 6.4 kWh per hour. The home only uses 2 kWh → the surplus is stored in the battery. 5:00 PM – the sun sets, electricity prices rise. The home uses 4 kWh per hour → the hybrid inverter draws power from the battery. 8:00 PM – you turn on the oven. Consumption increases to 6 kWh → the hybrid inverter supplements from the grid and optimizes the price. All this happens automatically – without you having to do anything.
